Destination: Cancun Hotel Zone
Location & History
Cancun is a premier destination on the Mexican Caribbean, a thriving tourist hub for both national and international visitors. Situated on the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, the city is divided into two distinct areas: the inland Cancun City and the coastal Hotel Zone, which is the focus of this edition.
Much of the area’s allure stems from its rich history. Originally founded by the ancient Mayan civilization, Cancun remained a modest village until the late 1970s, when the Mexican government strategically developed it into the world-renowned tourist destination it is today.
Cancun now stands as a landmark of successfully planned economic development.
Getting To & Getting Around
Entry is available by both land and air. To streamline the arrival process, physical tourist tags were replaced in 2024 with a Digital Multiple Migration Form (FMMd), which travelers can complete and download online before departure. Upon arrival, a passport stamp valid for 180 days is issued. Visitors planning a longer stay will require a Visa.
Cancun’s bus system is efficient and well-connected, serving major areas and neighboring tourist towns. At approximately $0.60 USD per ride, the bus is the most budget-friendly transit option in the city. Taxi services and well-known car rental brands are also available, with taxi fares typically posted in hotel lobby areas.
Why Cancun?
Cancun is celebrated for its pristine white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Whether couples are seeking high-energy water sports, swimming, jet skiing, and speedboat rides, or a romantic sunset dinner cruise, the ocean offers something for every mood. Scuba diving and snorkeling in Cancun’s turquoise waters provide unforgettable encounters with vibrant marine life.
Beyond its beaches, Cancun’s Mayan heritage is a major draw. Visitors can immerse themselves in the culture through resort dinner shows, guided museum visits, archaeological site tours, and excursions to the sacred cenotes. Adventurous guests can explore the El Rey Archaeological Zone, a stunning collection of Mayan stone ruins located right in the Hotel Zone, or venture to neighboring sites including Cobá, Tulum, and the iconic Chichén Itzá, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
