Beyond the Resort: Antigua Guatemala's Boutique Luxury Wedding Scene
San Miguel de Allende FAM Trip: Insights & Experiences
Last month in San Miguel de Allende, DestinationPick wrapped its 5th Annual Familiarization Trip. What sets this FAM trip apart from previous trips?
Each year, we host a limited selection of wedding planners on a trip to discover a destination, along with its resorts and hotels, through a uniquely tailored itinerary. This year, our destination and resort hosts distinguished themselves in three areas: the culinary experience, the haciendas, and the preservation of history.
The culinary experience won all our hearts! At each resort, the chefs were brought out and greeted with a resounding round of applause from the planners. In all my years of experience, the way these chefs prepared Mexican-Indian fusion cuisine was truly a step above anything I’d previously encountered.
This was also our first time taking planners on a site visit to a resort with haciendas. Each hacienda carries a unique history that can date back to ancient times. Artful vines creep up the textured sides of these massive rock formations, while nearby gardens of vegetation, fruit, and flowers create a backdrop straight out of a movie.
The preservation of ancient archaeological structures, paired with modern but unintrusive touches, is one aspect of SMA’s significance to global history.
What differentiates a less commercialized destination like SMA?
The total experience of a destination event isn’t merely about brick-and-mortar hotels; it also incorporates the atmosphere, the culture, and the energy of a place. You choose a rural destination for its natural backdrop and varied topography: mountains, valleys, woodlands, cobblestone streets, history, and more.
Resorts in more commercialized destinations like Cabo and Cancún move fast and mass-produce to accommodate guest volume. In SMA, by contrast, the typical maximum room capacity at hotels and resorts is around 150 rooms. Here, more priority is given to guaranteeing quality, personalization, and luxury over generic output.
For example, hotel chefs in SMA use local produce and can deliver a more customized presentation and taste.
Imagine the energy of vibrant dancing for the Baraat in the cobblestone streets of San Miguel. Next, a beautiful ceremony at a hotel with a modern, sleek aesthetic. Then, a reception at a colorful hacienda with an authentic Mexican-Italian vibe. You won’t find that in Cancún or Cabo.
Destination: Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Take a deep breath, and imagine yourself living out the dream wedding vacation of a lifetime: a small, intimate elopement or wedding with your closest relatives and friends, set amidst breathtaking, colorfully painted landscapes that overlook some of Earth’s finest scenery.
A small crowd, mesmerizing scenery, and love coursing through the air, there won’t be a dry eye in sight. The sound of laughter and clinking glasses during an open-air cocktail hour reverberates over the lake and reaches the treeline of a dense rainforest.
Immediately following the wedding and reception, you wake up early the next day to go backpacking up the hillside and explore ancient ruins. You’ve dreamed of this long enough, it’s time to wake up to the jungles of Guatemala!
Location & History
Guatemala, southeast of Mexico and west of other Central American countries, is known for its diverse wildlife, Mayan history, and four major topographical regions: volcanoes, savannahs, mountains, and rainforests.
Many cities were founded within breathtaking view of volcanoes. Of these picturesque cities, Antigua Guatemala is our focus this month.
Antigua Guatemala, originally named Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, was founded in 1524 as the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala. The city survived destruction from an indigenous uprising and natural disasters, and was rebuilt several times. After an intense earthquake in the early 1770s, the country’s capital was relocated to a geographically safer area, now present-day Guatemala City.
Santiago was subsequently renamed Antigua Guatemala, or “Guatemala of Old,” by the surviving citizens, who preserved its Mayan culture and Spanish colonial elements. As a result of their preservation efforts, the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Getting There & Getting Around
Upon flying into La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, travelers have several transportation options to reach Antigua. For longer-distance drives, taxis or shuttles are recommended to safely transport you and your belongings to your accommodation. Once in the city, more local forms of transportation, such as tuk-tuks or local buses (known as “chicken buses”), are inexpensive and effective.
Why Here Versus…
Ancient ruins, volcanoes, shimmering lakes, and lush nature are among the elements that contribute to Guatemala’s natural beauty and set it apart from other destinations. Guatemala lets you explore a lush, real jungle rather than a concrete one.
One of Guatemala’s unique offerings is its cultural tourism. International travelers can directly engage with locals in both modernized districts and rural, indigenous communities through cultural initiatives that these communities regularly host. Guatemalan tourism frequently involves residents in these activities, reducing imports and supporting local businesses, from craft and textile artisans to vendors for corporate events.
Another unique offering takes travelers on a cultural-gastronomic journey through culinary workshops that teach traditional recipes and the historic values tied to these meals within their communities.
The layout of Antigua reflects authentic Spanish colonial influence, bringing a taste of Europe to the Americas. By law, repairs to historic buildings and new construction are limited, preserving the integrity of the city’s Baroque-style architecture since the 16th and 17th centuries.
